INTERNAL FAMILY
SYSTEMS THERAPY
ALL PARTS ARE WELCOME
Have you ever felt as though different parts of you want different things?
Perhaps part of you longs for closeness while another keeps people at a distance. One part wants to move forward, while another feels anxious and holds you back. You may understand your patterns logically, yet still find yourself repeating them. Or perhaps your inner critic is so relentless that it drowns out every other voice.
If any of this feels familiar, you're not alone.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) offers a different way of understanding these inner conflicts. Rather than seeing them as something to overcome, IFS invites you to become curious about them.
Instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?", IFS asks, "What is this part trying to protect me from?" That simple shift in perspective can open the door to greater understanding, self-compassion and lasting change.

Understanding Your Inner World
IFS is based on a simple but powerful idea: we all have different parts within us.
You might recognise a part that strives for perfection, another that worries constantly, one that avoids conflict, or another that carries the emotional pain of past experiences. These parts aren't signs that something is wrong with you—they're natural responses to life's experiences.
Recognising these different parts can bring a real sense of relief. Instead of feeling confused or frustrated by your inner conflicts, you begin to understand why different parts of you respond in different ways.

No Bad Parts
One of the most compassionate ideas at the heart of IFS is that there are no bad parts of you.
The anxious part, the angry part, the part that shuts down, people-pleases, avoids conflict or strives for perfection—each developed for a reason. These parts have often worked incredibly hard to protect you, even if the strategies they've developed are no longer helpful.
Rather than fighting or rejecting these parts, IFS helps you build a relationship with them through curiosity and compassion. As protective parts begin to relax, there is often more space to connect with what IFS calls the Self—the calm, curious and compassionate core within each of us. From this steadier place, we can begin to understand and support our parts rather than being overwhelmed or driven by them.
As parts feel increasingly heard and understood, they often no longer need to work so hard to protect you, creating greater space for inner calm, balance and freedom.

What Happens in an IFS Session?
Every IFS session is guided by what feels most important for you in that moment.
Together, we'll gently explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences with curiosity rather than judgement. As different parts begin to emerge, we'll take time to understand the roles they've taken on and what they may need from you now.
There is no pressure to force change or revisit painful experiences before you're ready. We work at a pace that feels safe and respectful, allowing trust to develop naturally as you get to know your inner world.
Over time, many people find they become less caught in old patterns and develop a greater sense of calm, self-compassion and confidence in responding to life's challenges.

The IFS Model at a Glance
If you're curious to explore the model a little further, this overview shows how different types of parts relate to one another and how healing unfolds within the IFS framework.
You don't need to understand all of these concepts before beginning therapy. Many people find they become much clearer through experience than explanation.
