EFT & MATRIX REIMPRINTING

Shine Bright! Connect, Inspire, and Empower

A Gentle Way to Process Difficult Emotions & Experiences

Difficult experiences don't always stay in the past simply because we understand them. We may know that something is over, recognise why we feel the way we do, and yet still find ourselves carrying the emotional impact.

Our experiences can live on in many ways—in the thoughts and beliefs we hold, the emotions that arise, the memories we carry and the way our bodies respond. At times these feelings can become overwhelming; at others, we may find ourselves avoiding, suppressing or disconnecting from them altogether.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), often known simply as tapping, offers a gentle way to work with these experiences. While tapping on specific points on the face and upper body, we bring compassionate attention to whatever is present. This might involve talking about what happened, putting words to how you feel, noticing thoughts or beliefs that emerge, or simply staying with a feeling or sensation without needing to explain it.

Rather than pushing difficult emotions away or becoming overwhelmed by them, EFT allows us to approach them gradually and at a pace that feels manageable. In this way, thoughts, emotions and bodily responses can be explored together, allowing the intensity around difficult experiences to soften and new perspectives to emerge.

What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), often known simply as tapping, is a gentle therapeutic approach that uses tapping on specific points on the face and upper body while working with difficult emotions, thoughts, memories and experiences.

During a session, we might talk about what has happened, explore how you feel about it, or notice thoughts, beliefs, images or physical sensations that arise. As we do this, you tap gently on a sequence of points while I guide you through the process. Sometimes we use words as we tap; at other times, very few words are needed.

The tapping process can help reduce the emotional intensity associated with difficult experiences, making it easier to explore what is happening without becoming overwhelmed. As the intensity begins to settle, thoughts and feelings can shift, different perspectives may emerge, and experiences that once felt emotionally charged can begin to feel less so.

One of the benefits of EFT is its flexibility. It can be adapted to what feels manageable for you and can also be used in ways that don't require you to describe every detail of a difficult experience.

What Happens in an EFT Session?

Every EFT session begins with you. We'll take some time to explore what's been happening and what you'd like support with, before gently identifying where it might be helpful to begin.

As we tap, I may invite you to put words to what you're feeling, notice thoughts, memories or sensations that arise, or simply stay with whatever feels most present. There's no set script to follow. We pay attention to what unfolds and allow the process to guide us, adjusting the words and focus as things begin to shift.

You remain in control throughout. There is never any need to push into an experience that feels too much, and EFT offers gentle ways of approaching difficult material without having to tell the whole story or relive it in detail. We'll work at a pace that feels manageable for you.

How EFT Can Help

You don't need to know exactly why you're feeling the way you do for EFT to be helpful. You might be struggling with anxiety or worry, feeling overwhelmed by difficult emotions, carrying the impact of a painful experience, or noticing that certain situations continue to trigger a stronger reaction than you'd like. Perhaps there are fears, self-critical thoughts or long-held beliefs that seem difficult to shift, even when part of you knows they aren't entirely true.

EFT offers a gentle way to work with these experiences, helping to reduce their emotional intensity and create space for greater calm, clarity and choice. Rather than trying to push difficult feelings away, we can work with whatever is present and allow change to unfold at a pace that feels manageable for you.

One of the strengths of EFT is its simplicity. The basic tapping technique is easy to learn and, once familiar with it, you can use it for yourself to help manage everyday stress, difficult emotions or moments when you feel overwhelmed. In this way, EFT isn't only something we do together in therapy; it can become a practical tool you carry with you and draw upon whenever you need it.

Matrix Reimprinting

Sometimes the emotions, beliefs and patterns we struggle with today have their roots in experiences from much earlier in our lives. We may understand that an experience happened a long time ago, yet some part of us can still carry the feelings and beliefs that were formed at the time.

Matrix Reimprinting builds on EFT, using tapping alongside gentle imagery and memory work to revisit these earlier experiences in a safe and supported way. Rather than simply retelling or reliving what happened, we work with the younger version of you within the memory, offering the understanding, support or resources that may have been missing at the time.

You may have heard this kind of therapeutic work described as "inner child work". In Matrix Reimprinting, we gently connect with younger versions of ourselves who may still carry the feelings and beliefs formed during difficult experiences. We explore what they needed at the time but perhaps didn't receive—whether that was comfort, safety, reassurance, protection or simply someone to be there with them. By offering those missing experiences and resources through imagery and tapping, we can help the memory feel less overwhelming and allow some of its emotional impact to begin to soften.

This doesn't change what happened or pretend the past was different. Instead, it can help change our relationship with the memory and shift some of the emotions and beliefs we've carried forward from it, allowing us to relate to the past—and ourselves—with greater compassion and freedom in the present.

There are natural connections between Matrix Reimprinting and the healing work of IFS, although each offers its own unique approach. My experience in both allows me to work flexibly, listening to what you and your system need rather than following a fixed method. Where appropriate, we can draw on both, creating an approach that is shaped around you.
